I don’t own this, but I’ve seen at least 2 of the veggie tales in this collection (or at least parts while kids are watching them). I’m reviewing this collection because there is so little info on what’s in the value pack! I called Big Idea, and they couldn’t help me because this is a discontinued item. This one grabbed my attention when I read about it in the New York Times last month. The article made it sound like it might rival Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train or Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. Well it doesn’t. Not even close. Granted it does feature exotic Transsiberian locales from Beijing to Moscow, a train ride full of mystery and suspense, and the work of a set of top-notch actors. Unfortunately, everything that is attractive about this film is derailed by a script that takes one too many unlikely plot turns. So, instead of getting a suspense filled Strangers on a Train or an elegantly paced Murder on the Orient Express, we get just another Hostel or Turistas.

In the beginning there is the thrill that one is about to embark on an exotic journey into an area for the most part uncharted by Hollywood (Siberia), and the film does deliver a few glimpses of China and Russia that entice the eye. And, at first anyway, the characters and their relationships are intriguing enough to grab and hold our attention. Woody Harrelson is always good and here he delivers a fairly convincing performance as “Roy”, a christian volunteer doing work with needy children in China. Roy is the typical bleary-eyed American optimist blissfully unaware of his own naivete. The fact that he wears Woodrow Wilson styled bifocals nicely underscores his limited vision of the world. This isn’t Oscar stuff by any stretch but naivete is Woody’s forte and since this character truly is caring and compassionate and sees only the best in other people he’s actually quite likable. Since everyone else in this film is slightly jaded and gaurded and hiding a sketchy past, Roy’s optimism and openness and childlike enthusiasm for trains is actually quite refreshing. His openness is at times an asset (he is a people magnet), at other times a liability (his naivete and over-the-top Americanness make him an easy target at home and abroad).

Accompanying Roy on this volunteer trip to China is his wife Jessie (played by the immensely talented and infinitely watchable Emily Mortimer whose previous film appearances include: Match Point, Lars and the Real Girl & Lovely and Amazing). Jessie is an odd match for Roy. She has experienced more of the world than he has and her adventurous, and perhaps dark, past is something that she keeps to herself. That is until Roy and Jessie board the Transsiberian Express and meet fellow travelers Carlos (Eduardo Noriega, best known for his work in the Spanish film Open Your Eyes) and Abby (Kate Mara). Carlos and Abby are seasoned travelers who look like they have seen a lot of the world, and not just the stuff that’s in the Lonely Planet travel guide. Though well traveled, they are younger than Roy and Jessie and still full of wanderlust for the world and each other. Being around them reawakens Jessie’s own still simmering wanderlust. Reckless and impulsive Carlos awakens her sense of danger and her sensuality (which have remained for the most part dormant during her time with Roy); and unrooted and uncertain Abby reminds her of her own younger and riskier, and as yet unmapped, self. Abby represents that side of herself that Jessie misses but also fears so she feels threatened by but also protective of Abby who is traveling down a lot of the same paths and traveling down them for many of the same reasons that Jessie formerly did. Abby’s attraction to Carlos reminds Jessie of her own attractions to such men when she was that age and therefore she has conflicting feelings for Carlos: her younger self wants him, her older self wants him out of the picture. The fact that Jessie has a past and an understanding of many different types of existence makes her an excellent observer of human nature and as a result she takes wonderful pictures. But this avocation, like her relationship with Roy, is also a safe one. It allows her to indulge her interest in the disordered variety of life that she is attracted to but also to maintain a responsible and respectable distance from that world. However, her pictures also provide clues to an undeniable truth about Jessie. In the most memorable scene of the film a detective handles her camera and begins to scan through her photos while she nervously watches knowing the difference between culpability and liberty is only one delete button away. Mortimer does an exceptional job with the role. This character is full of surprises, including self-surprise, every step of the way.

The film could have worked well had it confined itself to developing the personal histories and tracing the evolving relationship dynamics and life trajectories of these four characters as they travel together in close quarters on an exotic train passing through one snowy Siberian locale after another. Instead, the film decides to take a different route and heads off into the usual Hollywood thriller terrain: drug smuggling, torture, murder, trainjacking & smashing etc… In other words, at about the halfway point, the film foregoes character study (and subtlety), and becomes your usual lurid, predictable, and forgettable summer flick.

I saw this movie in Los Angeles and was plesently surprised. This movie had me glued to my seat until the credits rolled. Anderson clearly has created a mystery masterpiece telling the story of a clueless couple, Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer, stuck on a cross country train ride through the grim backdrop of a post-soviet Russia. The two are caught in a whirlwind of drug-smuggling, torture and crooked cops. I haven’t been this impressed with a movie for a long time and can’t wait to buy this sucker on DVD disc!

Don Normark’s images are really wonderful – historical, documentary, and beautiful all at the same time. It’s also an incredible story, one many Angelenos don’t know.

While there are so many famous images of New York, taken throughout it’s history, there are fewer well-know photographs of L.A. from the early to mid-20th Century.

The documentary film, while fairly brief, is filled with a great deal of information.

The interviews of former Chavez Ravine residents, along with Normark’s images takes the story to another level.

I bought this book solely on it’s photographic merits. As a photographer, I was interested in the real life recording of a time period in our history. Although I live in Texas and the book is based on events that happened in California, the book brought back many memories of my own childhood.

The story reveals the true events that led to the demolishment of neighborhoods and the forceful displacements of many poor families just for the benefit ($$$) of a few greedy politicians.

I also recommend the DVD which adds additional empathy for the poor residents who were victimized by the greedy politicians of the era. The residents were given no recourse or support in this quest of ‘eminent domain’ in the name of ‘progress’.

This documentary is not just a story of or for Spanish speakers. It affected not only residents of Spanish ancestry, but also Anglos and African Americans as well.

I highly recommend this book as well as the DVD. For those who understand Spanish, I also recommend the music CD. I bought several of each to give to family members.

I have dual suggestions for anyone thinking of trying FRINGE. First, definitely watch it. Second, be very, very patient. The show eventually gets very, very good, but it takes a very long time to get there. I have a theory as to why that is. FOX has a tendency to micro manage many of its shows. DOLLHOUSE is an example. After Joss Whedon brought them his initial pilot, they nixed it and asked for a new one, and then dictated that the first several episodes be standalone episodes. And guess what. In the sixth episode DOLLHOUSE became one of the best shows on TV, with multiple delicious plot twists. The weakest part of the series? The first five stand alone episodes. I have not heard similar things about FRINGE, but given that the first half of the season tends to be almost all stand alone episodes and that they are far and away the weakest part of the show, I suspect more FOX interference. FRINGE has been compared to THE X-FILES in many ways, but one way that they are dissimilar is that THE X-FILES standalone episodes were far superior to FRINGE’s standalone episodes. So the viewer has to be patient for the payoff for watching the show to come to fruition. But the payoff does finally come. About halfway through the series a “mythology” arc emerges in a most satisfying way, resulting in a string of deeply satisfying and exciting episodes in the second half of the season. At the end of the first year, it hasn’t yet quite become a great show, but it shows all the potential of becoming one. But perhaps only if FOX will get out of the way and let them get on with the story.

The show also suffered from internal problems, the main one being casting. I came to like Anna Torv in the lead role of Agent Olivia Dunham, but she remained in many ways the show’s weak link. Many fans noted that her American accent (Torv is Australian) often faded and especially early in the show her Aussie accent would briefly creep in. She isn’t a bad actress, but neither is she – comparing the show once again to THE X-FILES – Gillian Anderson, who was by any accounting a brilliant actress. When I watch FRINGE, I often wonder just what the show would be like with a stronger actress in the lead role. I also have not yet become sold on Joshua Jackson as Peter Bishop, but this may be far more of a problem with the writers fully integrating him into the show. (Though the season ends with a great, great twist involving Peter that explains a lot of the background on Walter’s story.) Other than being Walter’s son, his role in the greater scheme of things hasn’t really become clear, though perhaps the writers envision a more crucial role in Season Two. Lance Reddick is a powerful physical presence, but is another actor who has perhaps been under utilized at this point.

Which leaves John Noble as Walter Bishop. Is there a more delightful supporting character on TV? He steals just about every scene he is in as the delightfully idiosyncratic and marvelously insane genius Walter Bishop. Walter is both a wonderfully written character and brilliantly portrayed by Noble. Sci-fi series do not as a rule get much recognition by the Emmys, but I would love to see Noble get a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama. Many of the great moments of the show’s first season revolve around Walter. And there are so many fine Walter moments that some go unnoticed. Among my favorites was in the show’s penultimate episode where the crew is assembled in Walter’s Harvard lab and someone says they need to turn the lights out. Walter gleefully tells them all to hold on and he claps his hands, demonstrating that he has “the Clapper” installed in the lab. But what makes the scene so funny is a very subtle bit of business. Walter has been passing out cookies and has one of his own. To be able to clap, he has set his own cookie down on the derrière of the corpse he has been examining and that is laying immediately in front of him. So while Walter is clapping his cookie is on this dead guy’s rear end. Typical Walter. Not least because of Walter’s penchant for blending the investigation of the most grotesque phenomena with food. Icky disfigured corpse? Nothing like that to get Walter to think about food!

The best thing about FRINGE is that it got better as it went along. This is a great sign for Season Two. I blame FOX for the slow first half of the season. Maybe I’m wrong in doing that, but we know for a fact that FOX messed up the first half of DOLLHOUSE, and they’ve been known to interfere with the development of other shows. The fact is this: executive producers and their writers know more about how to do a great show than network executives do. Maybe they feel that they need to earn their salaries by “crafting” the new series, but generally what they do is mess things up. You hire someone like J. J. Abrams or Joss Whedon to do a series, just get out of the way and let them do what they inevitably do better than you do.

So definitely watch this show. Be patient. It starts off OK, but about halfway through the season it will really start to kick tail. I think there is some core weakness in the cast, but not to the degree that it cripples the show. Best of all, this show really feels like it is going somewhere special. Make sure you are along for the ride.

If you’re looking at this, I assume you already have interest in this unique show, so I will focus this review on the blu-ray release. First things first, the cover has a cool reflective casing, with two different images. Nice touch considering the content of the show itself. It has the usual flip type case for multiple discs that we’ve seen in sets like Die Hard and Blade Runner. I actually prefer the flip cases to smaller individual cases. Also has multiple images on the CD’s, the cover and the inside, nice touch. That’s about it for cosmetics.

There is over 7 hours of bonus features including the bd-live content. BD-live is a very cool feature to have, even if you aren’t utilizing it now, you might be in the near future and it includes a single insert with instructions on how to get started.

Special features exclusive on blu-ray include Fringe Pattern Analysis: Take a Closer Look at 6 select scenes with the experts. These are actually really nice, as they focus on select scenes, instead of just some broad behind the scenes generalization that you usually get as an “extra”. And also additional writer/production commentary available through bd-live.

Some other goodies:

Featurettes on the show’s creation, casting, the real science behind it and a great look at the special effects.

There is the feature of Fringe: Deciphering the Scene Sidebars on every episode, this is an interesting add-on. I thought it was cool.

Disected Files and Unaired scenes are here. Alot of extras involved in indiviual episodes, which I thought was great and any fan of the show will like, as I’m sure we all have our favorites and our “not-so-favorites.”

I give this blu-ray set a enthusiastic thumbs up for all the extras. It’s appreciated. I’m a fan of behind the scenes info and if you are as well, you’ll enjoy this set.

Now, for the look. I have a blu-ray player (PS3) and an HDTV and all I can say, is beautiful. If you want to see what its capable of…this is it. The colors practically bleed off of the screen.

This is the best blu-ray package I’ve received since the Blade Runner release.

Set in a remote Maori village in New Zealand, a chief struggles with the death of his grandson and daughter-in-law. She’s given birth to twins, died in childbirth, and the boy twin, first-born son of his first-born son, is dead along with his mother. The girl twin survives, but the grandfather practically blames her birth for the tragedy. Who will succeed him and carry on the traditions that stretch back through time? Now the sacred chain of sons of sons has been broken.

The love-hate relations of the entire family, grandfather, grandmother, sons, granddaughter are heartrending and heart-warming at the same time. The fight to carry on the Maori traditions in the face of losing them in a modern world, and the struggle of a girl to ascend to chiefdom when girls are forbidden to do so makes for a mythical tale.

The young actress who plays Paikea, named for the whale rider who arrived from Hawaaki to found their tribe, is so good, you won’t believe this is her debut. Keisha Castle-Hughes is interviewed as an extra feature on this DVD; you will marvel at her brilliance and perception. The footage of whales used plus the models of whales for the most dramatic scene of a whale beaching are astonishingly real.

This is one of the most enjoyable films I saw in 2003 and I recommend it highly.

Niki Caro’s “Whale Rider” (based on the novel by Witi Ihimaera) is an uplifting tale of tradition and inner strength. Twelve-year-old Pai (talented newcomer Keisha Castle-Hughes) lives with her grandparents in a rural New Zealand town. Pai’s mother and twin brother died in childbirth, and her artist father took off for Europe, where he now has a new (pregnant) girlfriend. Pai’s brother was supposed to be the next chief of her tribe, and with his death Pai’s grandfather Koro searches for a new (male) leader, failing to see that it is Pai that possesses the courage and talents of a chieftain.

The movie is filled with a haunting soundtrack by Dead Can Dance’s Lisa Gerrard, including samples of traditional Maori music by Hirini Melbourne. The cinematography beautifully captures the many moods of light and shadow on mountains and sea, as well as stock footage of majestic whales. “Whale Rider” is an uplifting tale of love, loss, and courage, about tradition in the face of change, and believing in yourself.

Im an a huge fan of the Coen brothers and their work. Fargo and Barton Fink are by far two of my favorite movies ever made, and the brothers are on my list of all time favorite directors. Their films are dark and comical and some are very well written and shot. They have a style that separtes them from the norm of most Hollywood directos/writers and it has shown succesfull over the years giving them the nickanme “Hollywoods two headed director”. I have been putting buying most of their films however for a long time because of costs (Ultimatley I would have liked to purchase all of their films). This is a great box set for those who have patiently waited like me, or are just getting into Coen films. Granted I already owned two of the films, but I just passed them on to my dad, who has never previously seen any of their films and now is enjoying them himself. The strong points are indeed Fargo, Barton Fink and Raising Arizona. Blood Simple was the brotehrs first film and is on its own a terrific debut. The Coens draw heavily from film noir and dark comedy to make their films unique. Many might complain great Coen films such as The Big Lebowski and O Brother Where Art Thou? are not included, but is simply because they dont fit the chosen selection. And those are the only two other Coen films I would recommend one get to have a near complete Coen Brothers collection.

As for the film quality, they seem to be the same prints as the individually sold dvds and there are no extra features other than what has previously been released. The price of course is very reasonable (averaging $8-$9 a disc) and comes in thin jewel cases with a rather nice box.

The Coen brothers — Joel and Ethan — burst onto the scene with 1984’s “Blood Simple”, a slow-moving noirish crime drama that expanded the universe of those films in ways most Americans were not familiar. For one thing, it wasn’t clear right away what the crime was. Second, it wasn’t clear who the crimial was. Third, as that guy stated in one of the film’s great lines, “Where’s my jacket?” indicated the complete irony every character found himself facing in this very original production.

And thus began the career of two of America’s most celebrated filmmakers from the past 25 years. The Coen brothers grew up in Minneapolis and present a very Seinfeld-esque Midwestern view in their films, even those that take place in unnamed large cities including the oddball mobster movie “Miller’s Crossing” or “Barton Fink”, which begins in New York and moves onto Los Angeles.

The latter film — always one of my favorite Coen brothers’ works — was almost completely misintrepreted by critics when it arrived in 1991. None could identify the obvious symbolism that it was about a conflicted playwright (John Turturro) who took his great success from New York’s theater community and went West to become a screenwriter in Hollywood, where he encounters all sorts of evil including the Devil incarnate. Even during all these very unMidwestern transacations, the Coens stayed true to their upbringing and brought hardworking pull yourself up by your bootstraps elements to their movies, where every hero was challenged by the unusual, original and sometimes even the insurmountable. They did this even when mixing film metaphors as they so often do.

The greatest advantage of this package is it includes none of their later higher gloss but emotionally empty movies with George Clooney. It I was the one packaging this, I’d have deleted “Raising Arizona” and added “The Big Lebowski”, a better comedy and a film that features a much better cast than “Arizona”. But that’s small potatoes because, for less than $35, you have get a handful of the Coens’ best early films for home enjoyment anytime you want, including their great masterpiece “Fargo”, an American Film Institute top 100 movie that takes place in their hometown and is based on events that really happened.

So don’t waste too much time if original filmmaking, clever writing, wonderful character acting, and originality are assets you seek in entertainment. I suspect most fans of this film and Monty Python in general already own a copy on DVD. The bonus features in this new double-disc edition definitely make it worth the repeat buy. Most of the features from the Criterion edition (two commentary tracks, five deleted scenes, radio ads) are here. (The nice 1979 BBC documentary “The Pythons” is the only feature from the Criterion version missing from this new set.)

The new hour-long documentary included with this edition is worth the purchase alone. All five surviving Pythons are interviewed and offer a lot of insight into the film, from its conception, to the controversy surrounding its opening (in the US and in the UK), to its lasting standing as the Pythons’ greatest work. (Yes, I know, many fans like “Grail” even more.) I’m always pleased to see up-to-date interviews with the team, now all in their sixties.

The other significant feature is an audio reading of the original script, recorded with all six members several months before filming began. This is much more enjoyable and watchable than you might expect, illustrated onscreen with storyboard drawings and script pages. The reading is 20 minutes longer than the film, and you hear some bits that never made it past this stage.

And the film itself, of course, is a treasure. A hysterically funny, yet thought-provoking satire whose target is group-think in general, and not merely religion or superstition.

This is the 4th iteration of this movie that I have owned. My first was on VHS, then came the Criterion LaserDisc, which was followed by the Criterion DVD edition. I really wasn’t expecting much of an improvement over the Criterion DVD since this is an older movie. Regardless of what version you own, if you are a Python fan, you are in for a HUGE surprise with this latest edition on Blu-ray. The picture is near perfection with only a couple of scenes where I noticed the tiniest bit of film grain. Perhaps the biggest surprise for me was the remastered sound elements. After trying the different sound choices, I found the PCM soundtrack to be the best. I really wasn’t expecting the sound to be that great for this movie, but BOY was I surprised. Sony has truly outdone themselves with this latest high def remastering of Life of Brian. This is the absolute best I have ever seen or heard of this zany film. There are details in the picture that I have NEVER seend before, and I have seen this movie MANY MANY times. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that the special features were not in HD, but that is not that big a deal since everything else about this title is just spot on.

There are many who would say this movie is a sacrilege. As a Christian, I would disagree with such a statement. I have heard some say that this movie is making light of Jesus’ ministry, and especially his crucifixion. They are missing the whole point. I think this movie illustrates how some people will blindly follow religious leaders, or will just go with the crowd without really questioning what they’re doing, or why they’re doing it. The scene where Brian is mistaken for Jesus and chased by the crowd is a good example. When his sandal falls off, some take it as a sign that they should remove their own sandal, while some choose to follow the Holy Gourd of Jerusalem. How can anyone NOT see the humor in that??? Also, what if there really were some in the far back of the crowd at the Sermon on the Mount who couldn’t quite make out what was being said??? I have seen this movie countless times, and at no point is Jesus ever actually made fun of. Even the crucifixion scene is obviously not a slight on Jesus’ own crucifixion. He is not the only person to ever be crucified, since there were countless others who suffered this horrible form of death. The crucifixion scene obviously is not about Jesus’ crucifixion since there are much more than three men being crucified. Of course, I’m sure there are those who would disagree with me. If you do find this movie to be offensive, then simply don’t watch it. After all, this is still a free country. To those of you who have longed for a pristine version of this classic Python piece, you MUST get this one on Blu-ray. I will be waiting patiently for Sony to deliver a comparable version of the Holy Grail on Blu-ray soon.

Why continue with the Spotlight Collection, which is basically a re-release of stuff already available on the Golden Collection sets? It really makes no sense, especially considering the fact that there are still many great classic Warner Brothers cartoons that have yet to be released on DVD.

For instance, where’s “Racketeer Rabbit,” that classic 1946 Bugs Bunny short with gangster caricatures Edward G. Robinson and Peter Lorre? There have been numerous Looney Tunes DVD releases that this classic and other great cartoons have not appeared on, while there are other WB cartoons that have appeared on DVD twice so far.

Warner Brothers needs to release a seventh Golden Collection set that features all of those classics the studio to this point has failed to get on DVD. Releasing yet another DVD collection – like Spotlight Collection 7 – that contains cartoons that appeared on a previous release is like a slap in the face to the loyal fans who purchased the prior collections.

When it has came down to it, the Looney Tunes Cartoons have honestly been one of the most influential series of animation that we’ve enjoyed all throughout the years. But when I had found out that they would not be making anymore of them to thrive on the popular Golden Collection Series last year, I was absolutely devistated. Yet, it has came to a complete surprise that I found out that there were going to be more versions of the smaller Spotlight Collections, for budget seekers, and those who were new to the Looney Tunes series everywhere. It really was not something I was very happy with. Not only that, but when I also found out that the series had not anything to take the breath away that was new to DVD, I was also wasn’t very happy either. Here is what it feels like to say that is honestly all folks!

The Looney Tunes Spotlight Collection Volume 7 is not anything new for those who’ve enjoyed the laughter and the spirit from the Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volumes 1-6, not only that, but it doesn’t do anything to make it different from what the Golden Collections top to bottom had that was anything to excite and offer. Anyway, all of these shorts have been remastered, but not anything new for anyone who already owns all 6 of the Golden Collections at all. The volume tries to fully re-introduve the classic staples of Bugs, Daffy, the Chuck Jones favorites of the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, and some of the other favorites. Sadly though, only 2 shorts are new to DVD, rather than it being all 26. Well, here is the complete list:

Overall, I really was expecting more new to DVD shorts from the classic vault of the Looney Tunes series taht weren’t from the Golden Collection volumes 1-6. Considering now that the lesser appealing Spotlight Collection is still in demand, while the greater Golden Collection series is not releasing another volume, it is not a real must-have for hard core Looney Tunes fans, unless you have honestly never seen a episode of the classics in animation, than it honestly would be a great starter sampler for those new to the Looney Tunes gang. But honestly, the Looney Tunes Spotlight Collection: Volume 7 isn’t really enough to say That’s All Folks?? But just a bit to short.

The following paragraph is in my other reviews, but I believe it bears repeating. This six Disk DVD Set is extraordinary. The Picture and Sound quality are so very good that you feel as though you are watching it in a theater. The closed captioning and Audio come in other languages besides English. It’s jam packed with all sorts of extra bonus specials. The Brilliant creator, Joss Whedon and other staff members are at their very best, just as they were with their work on Buffy (which is also a must own). I not only highly recommend this Season disk set, but the other four seasons as well. Quite a bit of quality work went into the making of all five seasons. They are a necessary buy for any Angel fan! It’s completely impossible to be anything but extremely pleased with this purchase as well as the rest of the series. The writing, acting , directing, etc… are amazing per usual. This is without question once again feature film quality. The fact that all but the first season is filmed in Letter Box gives it that theater feel. In addition, the closed-captioning is less likely to interfere with the picture.

David Boreanaz (Angel) and Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia) are brilliant in their performance together as well as the growing sexual tension between them. I must give extra credit to J. August Richards as (Charles Gunn), he is a perfect addition to the cast. He was introduced at the end of Season One. He adds the much needed diversification of characters to the growing cast. He’s known mostly as the muscle, but is so much more. A fine actor with much charisma as well as humor. The addition of the karaoke singing club owner Andy Hallet (Known as The Host in the beginning and then Lorne). He plays our green demon from another dimension with physic ability that gives much room for expanding the stories. He adds some comic relief along with a fabulous singing voice. Last, but certainly not least, look out folks here comes Julie Benz (Darla). She is by far one of the BEST actors on TV and now lucky for us DVD. She is without a doubt AMAZING. You’ll just have to by this season to see what I mean. Don’t miss her incredible performance in season three. Joss Whedon once again comes through with continuing to make the show interesting, believable even though it’s all fantasy. He does this because he makes the people real and the stories real despite that they are all rooted in fiction. I not only highly recommend this Season disk set, but the other four seasons as well. Any true Angel fan must complete their set with this one. It’s a keeper folks. Purchase this before it gets sold out and you miss your chance to continue your collection. ORDER IMMEDIATELY AND DON’T FORGET TO BUY SEASONS ONE, THREE, FOUR AND FIVE WHILE YOUR AT IT.

Angel: Season 2 was where the show started to move into its own ‘formula’, and the opening statement that Angel himself was not devastated by the loss of Buffy served to encompase one fact: the show was on its own.

Where the first season essentially followed the monster-of-the-week plus occasional storyline episode formula that has been tried and true on Buffy, Season 2 started to move away from that into the darker, emotionally churning state of being that we viewers have grown so used to in the third and fourth seasons.

The second season of Angel also points at the show’s tendency to serve an overarching plot rather than a seasonal “Big Bad”, when it ends with a trip to a different dimension instead of concluding the Darla storyline (which is completed in the third season).

But though this season has a darker, more plot-arc oriented spine, it still contains some excellent character and monster-of-the-week episodes. One of these is “Are You Now or Were You Ever?”, thought by fans everywhere as being one of the best episodes of the show. Other greats include “Darla”, “Guise will Beguise”, and “The Shroud of Rahmon”.

There are also portents of the futures of the different characters interspersed throughout the season. This is where Wesley really matured, becoming a hard-bitten leader rather than a comical sidekick. You can see his character being prepared to make the harder choices that cause him to be so dark later on in the series.

Angel himself has a hard time of it throughout this season, but then, when does he not? He grows dark, deep-set despair keeping him from both his mission and his friends. But his redemption is both funny and touching when he returns towards the end of the season.

Cordelia grows immensely during this season, primarily because of her visions. She’s still “tell it like it is” Cordy, but her caring for others grows by leaps and bounds, setting the stage for the Cordelia we know later on in the third season.

Charles Gunn also joins the Fang Gang, forsaking his old ‘crew’ to help Angel Investigations in a slow process that is (fortunately) very believable.

Also in this season we are introduced to two new characters that will later become regulars: Fred and Lorne (the Host). The first is a slightly cooky, very intelligent woman who was stuck in Pylea for five years before returning with the Angel Investigations gang. The second, Lorne, is a truly unique character – a demon that sings, and can read a person’s destiny when that person sings. Both are excellent additions to the group, and help to flesh out the dynamic between the characters.

In conclusion, Angel: Season 2 serves as a stage-setter for the third and fourth seasons’ storylines and characters, and contains some truly memorable episodes as well.

I believe this to be one of those 90s comedies we all love, so the BD transfer was a nice addition to see come over. Playing it in the store today reminded everyone how fun the film was, but the obvious preservation work made for a nice sell on how these older films should be done.

The colors and clarity were actually cleaned up well, with the artifact being random to where there was no real detraction. The credit sequences looked solid, which for some of these 90s block letter credits the BD transfers can leave in horrible grain. With how they did Tomei’s makeup in this, there could have been plenty of chances for a dull saturation look, but in actuality it turned out looking great.

The sound is what sold me though. They mixed and re-amplified it into a 5.1 DTS that rocked the channels. The train scenes were excellent and that owl made customers do a double take. The supplements suck though. They included a variety of trailers from theater and TV, but in that it does show how the original stock looked compared to this upgrade. The commentary was fine, but I was hoping for some visual treats. Instead, the film will have to stand alone for buying the Blu. The menu shows a cleaned up reel also and the navigation was simple. Enjoy.

The transfer to bluray is nice. I wish there had been more special or extra features to go with this.
